Hi friend, I’m a dog lover and the owner of one big girl named Frida.
She’s a seven year old dog, and living with her brought me a lot of knowledge about dog care.
I’m here to answer your questions and help! A happy dog is one that plays, walks, runs, lies in mud etc. and you should let your dog enjoy life, but, that also means dirt and mud on your dog and on his bed! Even when you wash your dog, he will be dirty again if you haven’t washed his bed too.
Why? Because the dirt in the bed will cling to dog’s hair again!
So, the main question is: how to wash dog’s bed?
The bed I have for my dog, is a large wicker basket with a tick pillow on which she rests.
It’s easy for me to wash this kind of a dog’s bed, because I put the pillow in a washing machine, set it to medium strength and pour in a mild detergent. If it’s summer time, I take the pillow outside and let it dry slowly naturally, while on a cold days, I dry the pillow in the dryer.
There are different types of beds for your pet, so there are several ways to clean them!
How to wash dog bed which has a wrapper?
The wrapper or cover on the bed should be removed and placed in washing machine, also, the bed should be put in the washing machine.
It’s important to check if the bed can fit, is he to big for a washing machine! Is there enough space for both bed and the cover?
If not, you can first wash the cover with some of your stuff, and later, in another round you can wash the bed too!
Dog beds can also be washed by hand!
It would be easier for you if there was bedding on that bed that could be taken off!
Bedding can very easily be washed by hand or even left for a while soaked in water and a mild detergent.
If there isn’t any kind of a bedding, you can wash your dog’s bed by hand like this: pour hot water with detergent into a larger bowl and a sponge that you previously squeezed well, then, with strong strokes, rub the entire surface of the bed until it’s all wiped, then take it outside, if the weather is warm and leave it to dry.
How to wash foam bed for dog?
Don’t be afraid, my friend, this isn’t complicated cleaning process too!
First, fill the tub with warm water. Then add a mild detergent.
Put bed in the tub and make soap with your hands! Now, empty the tub and refill it with clean water!
Squeeze the bed with your hands to get the dirt and dirty water out!
Do everything with your hands, because the brush could damage the material.
Foam bed dries outdoors in the air; don’t put it in the dryer, this bed doesn’t dry in the dryer in order not to deform.
If you keep the bed and the dog always outside, and you don’t want to wash the bed in washing machine too often, you can take dog brush and use it to brush the bed to remove hair and small dirt. But, this is just a short time solution; you must really wash your dog beds from time to time!
It is very important to note that dog’s bed should be thoroughly vacuumed, both the bed and area around it, then you can return washed pillow to a clean base.
If your dog’s bed has a bedding that can be removed and washed and you don’t wash pillow in the washing machine, there’s another good way to clean the pillow once in a couple months, but then the bedding must be washed every seven days, don’t forget!
So, you can clean the pillow with steam cleaner!
Hot steam is a very powerful fighter against mites and bacteria!
You can cross the entire surface of the pillow several times and you will see how the steam penetrates to the other side of the pillow and how only the smell of freshness remains.
If your dog uses mattress covered with rubber, you are really lucky!
So, how to wash dog beds covered with rubber?!
Dog beds covered with rubber you clean with a damp cloth! Detergent or disinfectant can be sprayed on the rubber surface and wiped with a damp cloth!
You can put bedding or some old towel over the cleaned bed, so that the dog does not lie on the rubber!
Important: even though you have cleaned the bed, the dog beds should be sprayed with an external parasite, from time to time!
I have another good piece of advice for you on how to clean dog beds!
This advice is only for emergencies when, for example, your guests come and you don’t have time to wash dog’s bed in the machine;
Therefore, wet wipes can be great help; dog hair can be very well picked up with wet wipes and even wiped off some stains!
Also wet wipes have nice smell, so, that is another good thing about them, but don’t forget that this is not real cleaning solution, just a hint for when you are in a hurry!
A special cleanser that you should definitely include in your dog’s bed cleaning ritual is – baking soda!
Baking soda in combination with warm water and a little shampoo can be very effective means of removing stains and unpleasant odors of your dog.
It is really very important that you take care of your dog’s bed as if it’s your bed!
Your dog has complete confidence in you and is not able to perform some tasks without you, therefore, if he has already become a member of your family, do not forget to take care of his hygiene, because otherwise you can endanger his health and your own!
